Dear Friend

🌹 🎶 Make Music Not War🎶🌹
Music is the language of the spiritIt opens the secret of life bringing peace, abolishing strife - Khalil Gibran
Since I last wrote the world has turned upside down, the tragic madness of war unfolds in front of our eyes and it can seem that we are powerless to stop it.
However, across the world, people are raising their voices for peace in brave, courageous and creative ways.
No one wins in war, only peace can win.
To this end we pledge our hearts and voices, singing, chanting, calling, praying, meditating, longing for peace - not only in Ukraine but in all areas of conflict - whether thousands of miles away, down the street or within ourselves.

🌹 ðŸŽ¶ Make Peace Not War ðŸŽ¶ðŸŒ¹
Declare it. Just the same way we declare war. That is how we will have peace… we just need to declare it. - John Lennon

🌹  Peace with self - challenging times require us to step-up our self-care and anchor into daily practices that support our inner peace - be that exercise, meditation, good food, time in nature, phone a friend...

🌹  Peace in action Thich Naht Hanh, Vietnamese monk and activist who passed earlier this year said
When bombs begin to fall on people, you cannot stay in the meditation hall all the time. Meditation is about the awareness of what is going on — not only in your body and in your feelings, but all around you.
We can channel our feelings of anxiety, anger, despair into action -
here are 25 meaningful ways you can help Ukraine
Our daily actions, such as singing, help send good vibes out into the world!

🌹 Peace with people of all genders, orientations, abilities, cultures and creeds - Music can be a powerful tool to help us form friendships and connections with those we have been conditioned to view as 'other.'  Opening our social circles, hearts and minds, enables us to grow (and sing!) together.

🌹  Peace for the planet - Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania became independent as the result of a non-violent movement known as the Singing Revolution.  The conflict in Ukraine has stirred a global chorus for peace which has the revolutionary power, passion and purpose to provoke us all to reflect deeply on
what we can each do to create a more peaceful world.

As we contemplate the revolutionary power of our voices, I'm delighted to share my latest podcast with Randolph Matthews:
🌹New Podcast - The Embodied Voice with Randolph Matthews ðŸŒ¹
Watch on YouTube or Listen on Apple Podcasts

🌹 🎶 The voice is the healing tool - composer, performance artist and voice facilitator Randolph Matthews shares a wealth of wisdom about how we can claim the joy, beauty and power of embodied vocal expression.

🌹 🎶 MULTI-FACETED EXPRESSION ðŸŽ¶ðŸŒ¹
The voice holds many different facets of who we are and what we are going through personally - Randolph Matthews
Randolph's multi-faceted musical career spans two decades and travels through jazz, blues and contemporary dance. He trained at Goldsmiths and in Voice Movement Therapy in Boston, US and has performed and led workshops nationally and internationally, opening for Herbie Hancock, Grace Jones, performing for the Queen and collaborating with artists including international choreographer Alesandra Seutin.
Reflecting on powerful examples from his own life and work, Randolph shares how the voice can both be distorted and be a healing tool for our life experiences.  He shares the hopeful message that it is always possible to expand our voice and presence in the world.

🌹 🎶 JUST SING🎶🌹
There’s always a song in our hearts that we really love singing
Randolph Matthews

Randolph shares many insights about how we can show up for our voices, for the love of singing and the songs we love. He encourages us to dance with obstacles, embracing them as friction from which to generate movement and to break them down into manageable steps.  By just musing and exploring our voices a little bit every day, we become more of what we aspire to be - someone who enjoys the beauty of singing and vocalising.

🌹🎶 THE ARTIST'S VOICE ðŸŽ¶ðŸŒ¹
The artist has always been at the centre of expressing what the community is feeling. - Randolph Matthews
Talking about the urgent need for authentic vocal expression - ie saying it how it is - Randolph shares pivotal moments when artists such as Marvin Gaye, spoke their truth and in doing so inspired people across the world.

🌹🎶  FINDING GREATNESS ðŸŽ¶ðŸŒ¹
Pain is a temporary experience, but greatness is forever - Randolph Matthews
Describing the human connectivity that happens when people express raw feelings - as we have seen this week in the global protests against war - Randolph testifies to the power of voice to catalyse pain and inspire us to greatness.  The vocal revolution starts within and ripples out!

I found our conversation really powerful and inspiring and would love to hear what you took from it - do drop us a line/ comment/ review.

🌹🎶 SPECIAL SUMMER EVENT🌹🎶
Randolph and I will be inviting you to join us at a special summer event where you can explore your voice and take part in a magical performance.
Watch this space!

However Mad it gets this March, I wish you the peace that sings in the eye of the storm.

🌹 🎶 Loving the World this Valentine's Day🎶🌹

Dear Friend,

🌹 🎶 Loving the World this Valentine's Day🎶🌹
The first blooms of spring always make my heart sing -  S.Brown
Here in London, the first flowers are opening their sweet faces to the sun, lifting hearts as days lengthen and lighten.  This month's newsletter is full of rosy Valentine's reflections and a warm invitation to blossom at lots of lovely events including my Spring Sing Workshop

🌹 ðŸŽ¶ Resources for Celebrating Love this Valentine's ðŸŽ¶ðŸŒ¹
When we sidestep the tacky commercialism, Valentine's Day can be a moment to reflect on how we wish to express, experience and share love in the world.

🌹  Self Love - is an inside job.  Committing to thinking, speaking and acting lovingly towards self may feel icky at first, but with practice becomes a healthy habit.  From a positive foundation of self-love, we can nurture and grow ourselves through good food, exercise and creative activities.
Here's a fun free Date Night Yoga session from Yoga with Adriene

🌹 People Love - giving from a full cup, it becomes natural to extend loving thoughts, words and actions to those in our intimate relationships, families, and wider community. Who can you love bomb, thank or celebrate?
Here's some beautiful reflections on successful relationships and ways to love our community from Positive News

🌹  Planet Love - inspires gratitude and care for our home on earth. Consider buying Fair Trade choccies, swapping potted for cut roses, scattering wild flower seeds for the bees, hand-delivering a hand-made card or making a loving donation to your favourite world changing charity.

To cover all bases, take 3 deep tummy breaths and sound a big AAAAHHHHH from your heart for yourself, your people and our planet.

As we contemplate our relationships, I'm delighted to share my latest podcast exploring how we support healthy intimacy in art and life.
🌹New Podcast - Intimacy on Set with Ita O'Brien ðŸŒ¹
Available on video or Apple Podcasts

🌹 ðŸŽ¶ Holding a safe space - on the latest episode of #VocalRevolution, pioneering Intimacy Coordinator, Ita O'Brien shares how we support safe, healthy expression around intimate content on TV, film and theatre and how this relates to issues around sexual expression in wider society.
www.itaobrien.com www.intimacyonset.com

Content/ Trigger Warning: this episode discusses sexuality, intimacy, abuse and issues around consent. If you feel you need support around your experience of these issues, there are people willing to help and listen.

🌹🎶  WHAT IS INTIMACY ON SET?🎶🌹
Creating intimate content in a really open, professional, autonomous and empowered way for everybody - Ita O'Brien
Ita O'Brien is the UK’s leading Intimacy Coordinator and Founder of Intimacy on Set, her company set up in 2018, which provides services to TV, film, and theatre when dealing with intimacy, sexual content, and nudity. Ita pioneered the role of the Intimacy Coordinator and since 2014 has been developing best practice Intimacy on Set Guidelines, which have been widely adopted in the industry.
In our conversation, Ita shares how the Guidelines provide a safe, professional structure for the whole production from the get-go.  Similarly to dances, fights or stunts, intimate content can be safely created and choreographed with continuous consent and dialogue, with an Intimacy Coordinator and all professionals involved in the production.

🌹🎶 SERVING STORYTELLING ðŸŽ¶ðŸŒ¹
Every single moment is part of the storytelling - Ita O'Brien
Both in life and in art, Intimacy comes with high vulnerability.  Sculpting anatomically correct choreography which serves the emotional arc of the story ensures that actor can stay within character and is never exposed personally.  Similarly to other high-risk activities, such as bunjy jumping, safety measures enable actors to take a huge life-affirming creative leap.

🌹 ðŸŽ¶ GLOBAL IMPACT ðŸŽ¶ðŸŒ¹
Within structures, there's freedom to fly - Ita O'Brien
The Guidelines and role of the Intimacy Co-ordinator have been globally adopted and championed by movements such as Time's Up.  Ita has worked on numerous high profile productions with far-reaching impact. The intimate scenes in Normal People received widespread acclaim, and are now being shared as part of sex education in secondary schools as a model of first-time intimacy with continuous consent.
Writer, Actor and Director of I May Destroy You, Michaela Coel dedicated her BAFTA Award last year to Ita, thanking her for:
“making the space safe, for creating physical, emotional and professional boundaries, so we can make work about exploitation, loss of respect, about abuse of power, without being exploited or abused in the process."

🌹🎶  SELF-CARE ðŸŽ¶ðŸŒ¹
It has been a tremendous honour to bear witness to Ita's journey in our coaching sessions and a true joy to celebrate the revolutionary impact of her work on our podcast.  Our work began because she wanted to safeguard both her actors and herself when working with sensitive issues on a devised theatre piece. Her instinctive understanding of the importance of self-care and care for others has blossomed into a global mission.  The inner work of honest self-reflection yields vast rewards as that which we transform within ourselves transforms our experience and contribution to our world.

So whatever form self love you take this Valentine's and everyday, know that you are contributing to the growth of love globally!

Sending big singing bouquets of roses for a beautiful self-loving, people-loving, planet-loving Valentine's Day

Be well, be safe, breathe deep, sing loudly
