๐ŸŒน ๐ŸŽถ What does a Vocal Revolution mean for You?๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŒน
The most important kind of freedom is to be what you really are..
There can't be any large-scale revolution until there's a personal revolution,
on an individual level. It's got to happen inside first. -
Jim Morrison,
Interview with Lizzie James

As I sit in the frying pan of London, watching images of fires and global warming flicker across my screen, it's clear that humanity needs a collective revolution.  It's so overwhelming, but I believe that positive personal change - including claiming the joy, magic and power of our voices - can empower us to make a daily difference to our global community.
So if you were going to have a revolution in your vocal world that was completely personal and unique to you what would it look like - what would you be singing, saying, sharing, sounding?

๐ŸŒน ๐ŸŽถ  Revolution is Process ๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŒน
An ascending life, in which we keep striving to grow and improve—this is what is meant by human revolution. Human revolution doesn’t mean becoming something special or different from who we are; it simply means striving to improve, no matter what challenges we face. - Daisaku Ikeda
Revolution originally referred to the revolving of the celestial bodies in the skies.  Contained within it, the word evolve comes from words meaning to roll, unfold and open out. So rather than a singular event on a linear time-line, revolution is a cyclical unfolding process.
Whether we are just taking our first brave steps or have travelled a good way along our path of vocal expression, there's always capacity to (r)evolve. Exploring our voice is a daily (r)evolving process, with its own rhythm, pulse and flow, rolling us out into adventure and returning us home again.

๐ŸŒน ๐ŸŽถ The Quiet Revolution ๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŒน
The greatest and most powerful revolutions often start very quietly, hidden in the shadows. Remember that. - Richelle Mead, Vampire Academy
Change often starts with the promptings of the quiet inner voice - a hunch, nudge or whisper that comes on the wind or in a dream. Sometimes in a loud, noisy, fast-paced world, the most revolutionary thing we can do is get still and take a long, slow, deep breath. As the vehicle of inspiration and expression powering voice and life, the breath is our great, quiet ally.

๐ŸŒน ๐ŸŽถ Ripples of Revolution  ๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŒน
A great human revolution in just a single individual will help achieve a change in the destiny of a nation and, further, will enable a change in the destiny of all humankind. - Daisaku Ikeda
When I took self-defence classes, many moons ago, the first thing we learned was how to fall and roll. It was a humbling roly-poly lesson in finding grace within challenge.
Many people have experienced traumatic moments in early life where their voices were challenged, interrupted, censored or labelled.  As adults, when we face, evolve and roll through these places, it brings on a personal revolution whose benefits ripple out - excited relatives tell me singers who'd been silent are now engaging with their lives and loved ones in new ways. Other clients have grown their creative missions to a level of global leadership.
Never underestimate the power of one person having a quiet, personal revolution in their vocal expression.

So what, today, will be your brave, beautiful vocal revolution?

If I can support you to bring it on - through coaching or choirs -

๐ŸŒน ๐ŸŽถ Musical Migrations ๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŒน
Music travels more easily than people. Migrants may be in exile or faced with closed borders or the red tape of immigration regulations, but music crosses political boundaries without difficulty.  - Moving People, Changing Places
This #RefugeeWeek, I wanted to celebrate the enrichment that musical migration brings to our world and reflect on how we can ensure our musical exchanges are honouring and appreciative.
Our human family tree has its roots in Africa and, as any DNA Ancestry test will testify, our ancestral pathway travels centuries of migration. Humans have always been on the move and human civilisations have always been a cauldron of cultural exchange bubbling with a multitude of musics.
Simply put, we are all migrants, and our music travels with us.

๐ŸŒน ๐ŸŽถ Enriching Musical Exchanges ๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŒน
As we travel in song, we take imaginative voyages which broaden our minds and open our hearts to each other.
Based in the mad, magical melting pot of London, I am privileged to enjoy, learn and teach a wonderful diversity of musics - the benefits include:
* Empathy - one psychologist who attended a singing workshop told me that learning the songs of different cultures has been demonstrated to reduce prejudice and increase empathy for our global neighbours.
* Musical Skills - learning diverse musical styles, rhythms and techniques.
* Lingo - singing is a fantastic way to learn new languages.
* Collaboration - cross-cultural musical connections widen our musical spheres - eg: in one choir with Welsh-speaking members, we learned Welsh songs and performed in concerts with a Welsh Male Choir.
* Learning & Listening - to the expertise and experience of members of our communities. In one hospital group, a Ghanian member of the group gave us a fuller understanding of the song Senua Dedende and led us singing it.
* Respect, awe and wonder - for the amazing diversity of cultures and musical forms in this world.

๐ŸŒน ๐ŸŽถ Honouring Musical Exchanges ๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŒน
Appreciation is when someone seeks to understand and learn about another culture in an effort to broaden their perspective and connect with others cross-culturally.  Appropriation on the other hand, is simply taking one aspect of a culture that is not your own and using it for your own personal interest.  - Kelsey Holmes, Greenheart
Cultural appropriation is one aspect of the legacy of colonisation by white westerners, which consumed, destroyed, assimilated, censored and silenced vast amounts of global music.  It's an ongoing learning process to ensure that our cultural exchanges are honouring - this can include:
* Research - it's important (and fascinating!) to trace the roots of a song -  composer, lineage, history, cultural context, meaning and translation.  We may also need to check whether singing a song out of context will cause offence or harm to the culture of origin.
* Crediting - making sure the roots of a song are fully acknowledged and communicated verbally and in writing on programmes, lyric sheets etc.
* Honouring practitioners - collaborating, deferring and renumerating the expertise of practitioners from the traditions whose musics we enjoy.
* Giving Back - sometimes there is a clear way to pay our dues - eg paying copyright or buying the score/ audio of a piece of music. Many times, however, there is no direct way to do this, especially if a song comes from an oral tradition.  In these cases, we can find creative ways to contribute  - eg donating to charities working in the countries of origin.  Fundraisers such as Sing for Water, which I'm honoured to co-direct in London, are an important way for our choir communities to give back.

If you have ideas to share please let me know - I am always learning!
